Because by choosing fair trade coffee you are directly supporting a better life for farming families through fair prices, direct trade, community development, and environmental stewardship. We have been interested in helping farmers through our company and try to have coffees that are socially conscious. This is one of the best ways to do it. Not every company can do what we do; we humbly do what we can. We deliver our coffee locally from a delivery bicycle and use bicycles as much as we can. Our staff gets a daily bonus any day they ride a bicycle to work. We do this to lighten our footprint on the earth. This is that much less exhaust and this much less traffic to get in others way. Those who are dismissing this do gooder attitude may be interested to know that our costs are much less because of this. The cars we do own don't get used as much and so use less fuel and have less repairs, and as they are used for pleasure, have less expensive insurance. This also keeps us healthy and fit.We do other things to try to make the world a better place. As a small company, we don't buy entire crops. Our brokers buy the crops. Many roasters ask about the people growing the coffee, trying to make sure the people who grow our coffee are set up in a way that they can make decent lives in this activity. We buy coffee from cooperatives or from specialist farms where the prices demanded and received are much higher than the c market price you will read in the paper. We also buy organic and shade grown coffees to keep things in balance for a long term. Our constant questions about the coffee has caused one of our main suppliers to print a key on their listings so we can know which coffees are a good and fair deal all the way around. This advertises this type of coffee to the entire industry, which is a large victory for those that care.We use a lot of Fair Trade Coffees. Check it out at http://www.transfairusa.org |
